So what is it anyway? Depending on who you ask, you'll get a variety of answers. For me, it encompasses most of my living. What we eat, where we live, what we consume, everything. So many things have changed for me in the last few years. I no longer do much shopping at Walmart because we've cut our consumption of so many things. For example, we go through a roll of paper towels every 2-4 weeks now because we use cloth wipes for face/hands/highchairs and cloth wipes for the kitchen. I save the paper towels for really messy cleanups, like when there's a bit of grease in the pan after cooking meat. We still buy toilet paper though because dh must have it! I use cloth wipes about ½ the time, other times I grab TP out of habit. We use cloth wipes for our two children.
In my journey to prevent my daily migraines, I stopped using commercial cleaners to clean house and I now use Bon Ami, borax, baking soda, vinegar and other common household items to clean my home. For excellent recipes, read Clean House Clean Planet by Karen Logan. I also quit wearing perfume because it was making me sick. This has helped me a lot, but unfortunately most people I come in contact with wear perfume and seem to spray it on with abandon!!
We purchase Organic whenever it's available and affordable. We are a one-income family and live in a small town that carries very little Organic food, so I have to drive 30 minutes away in any direction. I've become practiced in stocking up, but there's no quick runs for Organic food around here- especially with gas prices being as high as they are! We are blessed to get raw (i.e. not pasteurized or homogenized) goat's milk from my mom, she has a milking doe. We use this for cooking mostly, but my daughter does drink some milk. When my mom's doe is not milking, we prefer to use Traderspoint Creamery milk. It is organic cow's milk, but unlike some major Organic brands it is not homogenized. I do believe that homogenization is a health risk, so we avoid it as much as possible. I understand that the Organic market is exploding, and even though it only accounts for 1-2% of the total food market that's a start. :) Hopefully someday it will be much more widespread.
I must confess a love for junk good and that we eat out more often than we should... BUT, it's one step at a time.
Life's a journey, you live and learn, live some more and learn some more. The never ending journey!
More soon...
